Magdalena Łazarkiewicz

A screenwriter and film and theatre director. A graduate of Cultural Studies at the University of Wrocław and of Directing at the Faculty of Radio and Television of the University of Silesia in Katowice. While still a student, she took part in the production of the film “The Maids of Wilko” as an assistant to Andrzej Wajda. “By Touch” was her feature film debut in 1985, created under the supervision of Krzysztof Kieślowski. She is the author of films such as “The Last Bell”, “Dance Marathon”, and “Departure”, which received the Special Jury Award at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. She is the originator, screenwriter, and creative producer of the television series “Deep Water”, which was awarded at the Prix Italia competition and the Prix Europa in Berlin. She is also the director of documentary films such as “The Gravel Pit” and “Absence”. Since 2011, she has served as the Artistic Director of the International Film Festival “Jewish Motifs” in Warsaw. Her most recent feature film, “Return”, was released in 2019.
